Sleep is vital for your health and well being. Yet millions of us are not getting sufficient rest. Sleep deprivation is a common condition that afflicts 47 million American adults, or almost a quarter of the adult population. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 60% of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more. In addition, more than 40% of adults experience daytime sleepiness which interferes with daily activities at least a few days each month and 20% report sleep problems a few days a week or more. Over one-quarter of working adults (28%) said they missed work, events, and activities in the previous three months due to sleep-related issues. People who drove after being awake for 17–19 hours performed worse than those with a blood alcohol level of 0.05% (Blood Alcohol Limit for Western Europe) or 0.08% (Blood Alcohol Limit for USA).

Getting less sleep than what your body requires has serious consequences. Symptoms can interfere with memory, energy levels, mental abilities, and emotional mood. According to WebMD reports, chronic sleep deprivation increases risk of early death. Studies show there is a greater risk for heart disease and heart attacks as well as obesity. In addition, insufficient sleep adversely affects the frontal cortex's ability to control speech, access memory, and solve problems. A sleep-deprived individual suffers from slower reaction time, weaker memory, and other thinking impairments. The trend in industrialized nations over the last hundred years suggests that people are increasingly sleep deprived. In 1910, the average person slept 9.0 hours a night. By 1975, the total had fallen to 7.5 hours. The same "Sleep in America" poll indicates that the average American adult now only sleeps 6.9 hours a night; this leads to fatigue and exhaustion. Shift workers suffer more than other people. Many shift workers average only five hours a night. A number of studies have reported that shift work throws off the body's circadian rhythm and have suggested that such changes could lead to chronic insomnia. One study found that 53% of night-shift workers fall asleep on the job at least once a week, implying that their internal clocks do not adjust to unusual work times. They are also at much higher risk than other workers for automobile accidents due to their drowsiness and may also have a higher risk for health problems in general. A Japanese study reporting on different aspects of insomnia found that excessive computer work was associated with all forms of insomnia. People who were over-involved with their work tended to have trouble falling asleep and they tended to awaken earlier than average.
